Millions of dollars in annual license revenue
Organizational Owner
Research and DevelopmentChallenge
The vendor was aware that there were many different piracy scene releases of its software each year. Additionally, its software is an add-on to on a major computer-aided design (CAD) platform that also has a major piracy problem, so it was concerned about a carryover effect on its own business. Multiple changes to its licensing proved ineffective to stem the piracy releases. Unfortunately, the vendor had no way of determining how significant its piracy problem was or the actual impact on its bottom line.
Solution
The Company initially wanted to track piracy and measure its impact, but once it began receiving data from its implementation, it saw that it had an opportunity to pursue the infringing organizations and recover revenue.
Results
The Company identified 1,300 unique machines across 200 non-compliant organizations within the first year of deployment and achieved revenue recovery of $30,000 per month using V.i. Labs’ outsourced compliance partner.

Initially Legal, now SalesChallenge
The Company was aware that its software was being pirated, but did not know the extent or how widely it was actually being used by organizations where revenue could be recovered.
Solution
The Company chose V.i. Labs as its partner to first assess its risk, then to track and quantify the adoption of illegal software by implementing piracy detection and reporting into the company’s major product line.
Results
Within the first year of measuring the extent of misuse, the company learned that 50 percent of the use was coming from active customers and the half from prospects. This prompted Sales to become the organizational owner and to act on the data. The company is recovering tens of millions of dollars in license revenue annually.
