V.i. Labs and Reprise Software Team Up to Offer Comprehensive Anti-Piracy Solution

Partnership Combines Advanced License Management System with Strong Software Protection Technology

Waltham, MA — November 20, 2006 — V.i. Laboratories, Inc. (“V.i. Labs”), a provider of software protection solutions for securing high value and mission critical applications, announced today a partnership with Reprise Software, Inc., a provider of software license management systems for end-users and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). The partnership combines V.i. Labs’ strong anti-piracy technology with Reprise’s license management system to provide comprehensive protection against software cracking threats.

The Reprise License Manager (RLM) is a software licensing solution that enables ISVs to more effectively price and license their products for sale to end-users. Unlike legacy licensing systems, RLM provides an open platform that is easy to integrate with existing applications, accessible reporting capabilities, and improved value-oriented pricing. Reprise Software was founded in January 2006 by Matt Christiano, who served as Chief Executive Officer of Globetrotter Software, Inc., the company that developed the FLEXlm license management system. Globetrotter Software was sold to Macrovision in 2000.

“License management is a fundamental component of an ISV’s anti-piracy strategy. At the same time, ISVs are demanding solutions that protect against common software cracks that lead to piracy,” said Matt Christiano, CEO of Reprise Software. “We saw significant value in V.i. Labs’ CodeArmor product because it provides strong protection for license management functions without impacting the software development process.”

According to Business Software Alliance and other watchdog piracy groups, software piracy is on the rise, most notably in emerging foreign markets. The software cracking community has continually targeted license management systems embedded within high value and popular software programs. Using reverse engineering techniques, a cracker can develop unauthorized license key generators or binary patches that bypass license enforcement.

The V.i. Labs and Reprise Software offering will provide a more comprehensive defense against these threats. The RLM solution already employs public/private key encryption technology to protect against unauthorized license generators. With the added application security provided by CodeArmor, ISVs will gain comprehensive protection against binary patching threats as well. Because CodeArmor can protect software applications without requiring source code changes, ISV customers can easily apply software protection to critical license functions after the development process is complete.

“License management and software protection are foundation blocks for preventing overt and inadvertent piracy,” said Joe Noonan, CEO and president of V.i. Labs. “By adding CodeArmor protection to RLM, vendors will be able to recover significant revenue in markets with rampant piracy.”
