V.i. Laboratories, Inc. Secures First-Round Funding to Deliver New Application Security Technology
Technology Simplifies the Process of Protecting High Value and Mission Critical Software Applications to Guard Against Piracy, Theft and Tampering
Waltham, MA — June 27, 2006 — V.i. Laboratories announced today it has secured first-round
funding, led by Rockford Capital. The funding will be used to build a core team
and market the company's innovative application security technology.
V.i. Laboratories’ software protection technology will address the growing need for application providers,
enterprise organizations and government agencies to safeguard intellectual property resident within software
applications, as well as mitigate the malicious exploitation of critical system software.
“As organizations continue to expand their channels into un-trusted environments, foreign markets, and leverage
the web as a distribution channel, software protection approaches must be bound to the applications themselves.
We offer a unique technology that can automate the protection of applications, without requiring any modification
of application source code or additional complex security infrastructure,” said V.i. Laboratories’ President and
CEO Joe Noonan.
The company’s technology, CodeArmor™ is based on the concept of Founder and CTO, Dr. David Pensak, who developed the first
Internet firewall and enterprise digital rights management technology.
“Today’s information security products secure network elements, encrypt data and packets, or detect network
intrusions. However, little effort has been devoted to protecting the operation of application code and algorithms
within computing environments,” said Dr. Pensak. “Solutions to ensure that software application programs are
executed as originally intended have become essential to developing a comprehensive approach to security.”
Because the V.i. Laboratories technology can protect software applications without source code modifications,
disruption to existing product development processes or implementation of complex security infrastructure, the
technology is accessible to a wide variety of organizations in need of more robust software protection. And,
the technology’s ability to reduce financial loss associated with software piracy enables companies to safely
expand the uses and channels of existing applications.
V.i. Laboratories’ executive team brings to the company significant experience with both start-ups and entrenched
market leaders. The core team includes Joseph Noonan, president and CEO; Dr. David Pensak, founder and CTO;
Sam Shoneye, VP, finance and administration; and Henry Tumblin,
VP, engineering.
“Increasing numbers of applications are exposed to the Internet without the full benefit of comprehensive
hardening and protection,” said Eric Ogren, security analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “V.i. Laboratories’
clever combination of cryptography and run-time controls protects applications from being reverse-engineered,
modified with malicious intent, or executed by unauthorized users.”
Key attributes of the V.i. Laboratories technology include:
- Patent pending approach to harden software applications without requiring source code
modifications or development process changes
- Active run-time monitoring to ensure applications are executed in a secure environment,
and protected against reverse engineering and debugging attempts
- Granular encryption at the application function level, which persists with the application
wherever it is distributed to reduce reverse engineering threats
- Ensured application integrity by tampering prevention at run time and utilizing self-
healing capabilities
- Enables organizations to integrate additional authentication, encryption and key
management extensions to support a wide variety of application environments and higher
levels of security
- Automated process protection to eliminate the need for software development expertise
V.i. Laboratories is a provider of application security solutions that protect against
the misappropriation and theft of intellectual property resident in software applications.
Through V.i. Laboratories’ patent-pending technology, software vendors, enterprise
organizations and government agencies are able to easily secure their applications
against the threat of piracy, tampering and theft, independent of where the applications
are distributed. V.i. Laboratories is privately held and is headquartered in Waltham, MA.
