V.i. Labs Announces CodeArmor Software Protection Solution and Customer Adoption
Solution Deployed and in Use by Leading Provider of Detection Equipment to Protect Intellectual Property
Waltham, MA — September 18, 2006 — V.i. Laboratories, Inc., a provider of software
protection solutions for securing high value and mission critical applications,
announced today the general availability of CodeArmor™ version 2.0. CodeArmor enables
application providers, enterprises and government agencies to prevent piracy and
theft of intellectual property resident within their software applications.
The company also announced that CodeArmor has been deployed by a leading provider
of detection equipment to protect highly sensitive algorithms embedded within their
detection systems which are currently deployed worldwide. The systems are in use
by governments and corporations around the world to combat terrorism, drug and weapons
smuggling, illegal immigration, and trade fraud.
Based on patent-pending technology, CodeArmor is an out-of-the-box software protection
solution that combines secure execution monitoring and intrusion prevention to provide
comprehensive security. CodeArmor hardens and protects applications in their executable
form — virtually eliminating the need for software development resources or impacting
product time to market. Once protected, applications are persistently secured against
piracy, tampering, misuse and theft wherever they’re deployed.
“Organizations need a comprehensive set of countermeasures to actively guard against
piracy cracks and the theft of intellectual property resident within their software
applications,” said Dr. David Pensak, founder and CTO of V.i. Labs. “However, many
software vendors are reluctant to implement solutions that require source code modification
or complex security infrastructure. CodeArmor 2.0 combines ease of use with strong
security, making it a unique solution for protecting high value and mission critical
applications wherever they’re deployed.”
Version 2.0 features a simple user interface for configuring the appropriate level
of software protection for an application as well as enhanced countermeasures to
detect and combat reverse engineering threats. Software reverse engineering is the
process of deconstructing an existing application to recover details about its design
and implementation. This process is commonly used to pirate software, steal sensitive
IP and develop malicious software.
Said a customer company spokesperson, under condition of anonymity due to security
concerns: “We sell our detection systems into foreign markets where there is lax
enforcement of intellectual property laws and an ongoing threat that our sensitive
source code will be stolen and reverse engineered. We examined a number of alternative
solutions to harden our software application but many required extensive services
or source code modification. We chose CodeArmor because it delivered the security
we needed without impacting our development resources or product functionality.”
CodeArmor version 2.0 includes the following new features:
-
Graphical user interface for configuring software protection. Organizations
can easily apply protection based on the threat level to their applications. Each
progressive threat level adds additional anti-reverse engineering, anti-debugging
and tamper deterrents to the software application.
-
Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) support. AES is a block cipher adopted
as an encryption standard by the U.S. government. CodeArmor can now use AES to provide
a strong defense against reverse engineering and malicious tampering of applications.
-
Advanced countermeasures to prevent reverse engineering. CodeArmor 2.0 offers
additional capabilities to obfuscate where application functions are decrypted in
memory to further deter reverse engineering threats.
-
CodeArmor Application Extension Software Development Kit (SDK). CodeArmor
2.0 includes a SDK that lets organizations extend authorization, authentication,
and encryption to existing applications without source code changes. The SDK allows
software publishers and on-line distributors to integrate CodeArmor's protection
into their existing authorization and software DRM framework. Organizations can
use these extensions to bind their applications to specific machines and integrate
them with software DRM systems.
Availability and Pricing
CodeArmor 2.0 is available immediately. Pricing starts at $18,500 for an enterprise
deployment. Independent software vendors can take advantage of custom pricing structures
that consist of a one-time license fee and ongoing royalty payments.
